Summer Camp Tennis Jobs

    Overview

At Camp IHC, tennis is one of our biggest sports.  We have 17 tennis courts that are never empty!

On a more typical day, tennis coaches will teach six to seven periods of tennis a day. You’ll teach campers from 6-16 years old with a variety of abilities. There will also be opportunities to coach specialized lessons to tennis players.

Over the summer you will facilitate competitive games, coach IHC teams against other camps in tournaments, and help campers perfect their forehands, backhands, serves, volleys, footwork, and more.

    Why Coach Tennis at Camp?

Because we truly believe there is no other tennis program like ours we have created the IHC Tennis Academy (IHCTA). The IHCTA is something we’re immensely proud of. We can have the best facilities, the best camp, the best weather, food, bunk, campfires, you name it, but the IHCTA would mean nothing without the team of coaches we have to make the academy a top-notch operation.

We hire over 20 coaches from around the world to come and teach tennis to our campers. We have a mix of former top 500 players, national champions, state champions, PTR, ITF & USTA qualified coaches, LTA coaches, and D1 college players. They all have two things in common. One, our coaches live and breathe tennis. Two, they love summer camp.

5 things we look for in Coaches

  1. Sports Expertise and Knowledge: A strong understanding of various sports and physical activities is essential. The ability to teach techniques, strategies, and rules across a range of sports helps create a diverse and engaging athletic program.

  2. Leadership and Motivation: Inspiring and motivating kids to participate in and enjoy physical activities is key. An athletics instructor should be able to lead by example, encourage teamwork, and foster a positive and energetic environment.

  3. Patience and Adaptability: Working with children of different ages and skill levels requires patience and the ability to adapt instruction to meet individual needs. An effective instructor can tailor activities to ensure every child is engaged and having fun.

  4. Safety Awareness: Ensuring the safety of all participants during physical activities is paramount. The instructor should be well-versed in safety protocols, injury prevention, and know how to manage emergencies effectively.

  5. Communication and Teaching Skills: Clear and effective communication is crucial for instructing children in sports. An instructor must be able to explain rules, demonstrate techniques, and provide constructive feedback in a way that is understandable and encouraging for kids.

FAQs

  • Coaching periods are around 40-50 minutes long. You’ll normally coach 5 or 6 periods a day. Campers will arrive at the tennis area with their camp counselor.  From the start, you will need to engage with the campers. You and your team will have lesson plans (that you help build!) that will be tailored for the different levels and abilities.

  • A typical class will have around 12-18 campers. Sometimes bunks have split activities or off-camp trips, or perhaps two bunks are scheduled for tennis at once! This means you can sometimes have a handful of campers or a larger class to teach. You will have a schedule for each day to know what campers to expect before the day starts.

  • Yes! There are different types of tournaments over the summer. There are divisional tournaments where bunks will play mini-tournaments against each other. There are inter-camp tournaments where different camps will play against each other. There are off-camp tournaments where you will go to another camp to represent IHC with your team.

  • Our camp season runs from mid-June to mid-August. For this position you would need to be available for this period.

  • You will also teach a lot of private one to one tennis lessons each day. Our Tennis Director's will assign you specific kids suited to your teaching style to help grow their game over the course of the summer.

  • Yes. On a regular schedule you will have one period off each day.

You will also have one full day and night off each week. This is your chance to rest, recover and try some new things on camp and explore new places off camp with other staff.
