5 things we look for in Coaches

  1. Sports Expertise and Knowledge: A strong understanding of various sports and physical activities is essential. The ability to teach techniques, strategies, and rules across a range of sports helps create a diverse and engaging athletic program.

  2. Leadership and Motivation: Inspiring and motivating kids to participate in and enjoy physical activities is key. An athletics instructor should be able to lead by example, encourage teamwork, and foster a positive and energetic environment.

  3. Patience and Adaptability: Working with children of different ages and skill levels requires patience and the ability to adapt instruction to meet individual needs. An effective instructor can tailor activities to ensure every child is engaged and having fun.

  4. Safety Awareness: Ensuring the safety of all participants during physical activities is paramount. The instructor should be well-versed in safety protocols, injury prevention, and know how to manage emergencies effectively.

  5. Communication and Teaching Skills: Clear and effective communication is crucial for instructing children in sports. An instructor must be able to explain rules, demonstrate techniques, and provide constructive feedback in a way that is understandable and encouraging for kids.

FAQs

  • Coaching periods are around 40-50 minutes long. You’ll normally coach 5 or 6 periods a day.  Camp counselors will accompany the campers to the skate park and then it’s your responsibility to engage with the campers and get them ready for the lesson. You and your team will have lesson plans (that you help build!) that will be tailored for the different levels and abilities. Those 40-50 minutes are yours to make as amazing as possible.

  • A typical session will have around 12-18 campers. Sometimes bunks have split activities or off-camp trips, or perhaps two bunks are scheduled for skateboarding at once! This means you can sometimes have a handful of campers or a larger session to teach.

You will have a schedule for each day to know what campers to expect before the day starts.

  • We are looking for passionate, friendly, and social people who simply love to skateboard and love helping others learn to skateboard too. Skateboarding is a way of life. So if you breathe skateboarding and want to help our campers do that too, then this is the job for you!

Of course, applicants should be excellent skaters that are 100% confident and capable skating street and transition, as well as all the areas and elements of our skatepark, including the above ground ramps, street course, and bowl.

  • Our camp season runs from mid-June to mid-August. For this position you would need to be available for this period.

  • Throughout the summer you will live in a bunk with campers and other camp counselors. When you’re not coaching you’ll connect with them and be part of their group to provide extra coverage.

During this time you’ll have an opportunity to take part in other activities with them and help your team out.

  • Yes. On a regular schedule you will have one period off each day.

You will also have one full day and night off each week. This is your chance to rest, recover and try some new things on camp and explore new places off camp with other staff.
