Summer Camp Hockey Jobs

  • Overview

The Gymnastics program at Camp IHC is a camp favorite. Our fully equipped gymnastics building, appropriately named “The Vault,” is always alive with campers practicing anything from forward rolls to front handsprings and everything in between.

On a more typical day, gymnastic instructors will teach five to six periods with campers from 6-16 years old with a variety of abilities. There will also be opportunities to coach one on one private lessons to more advanced gymnasts.

  • Why Teach Gymnastics at Summer Camp?

It’s not an easy job, but if you’re ready to challenge yourself then this is a bar to grab with both hands. You’ll have groups of campers with different abilities in the same class or sometimes you might even have a camper that just isn’t into gymnastics that day--that’s when you’ll rise to the challenge with enthusiasm and creativity. You’ll also find it to be a rewarding role when you see a camper stick their first landing or master a new technique.  And at the end of the summer, we hope, you’ll find your coaching and leadership skills have become more defined and polished.

At Camp IHC you’ll be a role model both on and off the mats to our campers. They will look up to you in so many ways and as cliche as it sounds, they will 100% have an impact on you too.

5 things we look for in Coaches

  1. Sports Expertise and Knowledge: A strong understanding of various sports and physical activities is essential. The ability to teach techniques, strategies, and rules across a range of sports helps create a diverse and engaging athletic program.

  2. Leadership and Motivation: Inspiring and motivating kids to participate in and enjoy physical activities is key. An athletics instructor should be able to lead by example, encourage teamwork, and foster a positive and energetic environment.

  3. Patience and Adaptability: Working with children of different ages and skill levels requires patience and the ability to adapt instruction to meet individual needs. An effective instructor can tailor activities to ensure every child is engaged and having fun.

  4. Safety Awareness: Ensuring the safety of all participants during physical activities is paramount. The instructor should be well-versed in safety protocols, injury prevention, and know how to manage emergencies effectively.

  5. Communication and Teaching Skills: Clear and effective communication is crucial for instructing children in sports. An instructor must be able to explain rules, demonstrate techniques, and provide constructive feedback in a way that is understandable and encouraging for kids.

FAQs

  • Coaching periods are around 40-50 minutes long. You’ll normally coach 5 or 6 periods a day. Campers will turn up at the gymnastics pavilion with their camp counselors. From the get go, you need to engage with them. You and your team will have lesson plans (that you help build!) that will be tailored for the different levels and abilities. Those 40-50 minutes are yours to make as amazing as possible.

  • A typical class will have around 12-18 campers. Sometimes bunks have split activities or off-camp trips, or perhaps two bunks are scheduled for gymnastics at once! This means you can sometimes have a handful of campers or a larger class to teach. You will have a schedule for each day to know what campers to expect before the day starts.

  • Eligibility for the IHC gymnastics programs requires a wide range of skills and experience. We hire staff from around the world, so when you apply please let us know what qualifications and experience you have.

  • Our camp season runs from mid-June to mid-August. For this position you would need to be available for this period.

  • Throughout the summer you will live in a bunk with campers and other camp counselors. When you’re not coaching you’ll connect with them and be part of their group to provide extra coverage. During this time you’ll have an opportunity to take part in other activities with them and help your team out.

  • Yes. On a regular schedule you will have one period off each day.

You will also have one full day and night off each week. This is your chance to rest, recover and try some new things on camp and explore new places off camp with other staff.
