Health Center at Summer Camp

A summer at Camp IHC has a lot of moving parts. Every summer we bring 700 campers and 450+ staff from around the world. None of that is possible if we don’t have a professional health team to keep us safe.

The nurses, doctors, and health center assistants at camp are responsible for camper medications, our health center rooms, general treatment, diagnosis and much more.

With 1100 people on camp, running our health and wellness center really is a morning to night operation!

Why Work at Summer Camp?

We take our health care at camp very seriously, this is a professional job for nurses and health care professionals looking for short-term summer work.

In 2018 we built our brand new Health and Wellness Center (HAWC) with private bedrooms, examine rooms, offices, med pass stations, private kitchens and laundry. It’s a state-of-the-art facility.

We are hiring nurses (RN and LPN) along with Health Center Assistants (Nursing, Pre-Med, etc. students.) At Camp IHC we will pay a competitive wage and can be flexible when it comes to job needs.

FAQs

  • We have both day and night nurse roles.

A typical day for the nurse is based around an eight-ten hour shift. Most shifts begin with rounds on sick campers then progress to “Clinic Call” for campers and staff. Some nurses will be dedicated to medication administration for camper medications.

  • The HAWC team is around 15-20 staff. This is comprised of Nurses, Physicians, and Health Center Assistants. Usually there are 10 people on each shift so the work is well shared.

  • Yes. For nursing positions we require a valid PA nursing license (Applicants can obtain after hire and reimbursement is provided in a staff contract.) Previous camp nurse experience is not required but a love of children and outdoors is necessary.

Health Center Assistants are typically hired from students that are working towards a degree in the medical field (Nursing, Pre-Med, Pre-Physician’s Assistant, OT/PT/SLP, etc.)

For any nurse or student trying to break into Pediatrics this role is a great resume builder.

  • Camp nursing requires some skills or tasks that many nurses may have never experienced before. As part of the summer contract we provide a 2 week paid training period where we spend time teaching the “ins and outs” of Camp IHC along with organizing the Health Center for use in the summer.

  • Yes. The HAWC facility has private bedrooms with private en-suite bathrooms and storage space.

Health Center Assistants live in cabins with other staff members.
