Summer Camp Dance Jobs

  • Overview

Dance at Camp IHC just moves you!  It is one of the most energetic and creative areas at camp. We have an incredible dance studio that opens up to an outdoor stage where we can host performance shows for all of camp to see!

As a dance instructor you will lead classes of campers, helping them learn various styles and disciplines. Through dance you will teach them a deeper understanding of body movement, control, discipline & creativity.

While the younger campers will have a more introductory teaching program, our older campers can be challenged with a higher level of techniques.

  • Why Teach Dance at Camp?

Dance is widely under-taught in schools. It is often overlooked as a secondary sport and it is rare to find large groups of kids learning dance together. As a dance instructor at IHC you will have the opportunity to teach dance to campers of all ages and abilities.

In our dance studio, you and the rest of the dance team will be able to work creatively to bring our dance program to life.

It’s hard-work! Not all classes will be easy, but at the end of the summer you will leave with a portfolio of experience. You will become a better dance teacher and have the pride watching your choreographed routines performed in camp showcases or in off-camp dance competitions.

FAQs

  • Teaching periods are around 40-50 minutes long. You’ll typically teach 5 or 6 periods of dance a day. Camp counselors will accompany the campers to the dance studio and then it’s your responsibility to engage with the campers and get them ready for the lesson. You and your team will have lesson plans (that you help build!) that will be tailored for the different levels and abilities. Those 40-50 minutes are yours to make as amazing as possible.

  • A typical class will have around 12-18 campers. You will have a schedule for each day to know what campers to expect before the day starts. Sometimes bunks have split activities or off-camp trips, or perhaps extra campers are scheduled for dance at once!

This means you can sometimes have a small handful of campers or a larger class to teach. Dance is indoors, so on rainy days you may have more campers than usual!

  • In many ways, this is up to you and the dance team. During staff training, before the campers arrive, you and the dance team will work together to build a program for the summer. It may also depend on your own teaching abilities and experiences. In the past, teams have performed all varieties of dance: ballet, jazz, hip-hop, modern, contemporary, and even breakdancing.  Instructors have also integrated different yoga styles in order to improve mindfulness and flexibility in the dancers.

  • Yes. When we compete against other camps you will travel with campers and other camp counselors to represent Camp IHC. You’ll go for most of the day and you’ll be responsible for coaching campers along with keeping them safe.

  • Throughout the summer you will live in a bunk with campers and other camp counselors. When you’re not teaching you’ll connect with them and be part of their group to provide extra coverage. During this time you’ll have an opportunity to take part in other activities with them and help your team out.

  • Yes. On a regular schedule you will have one period off each day.

You will also have one full day and night off each week. This is your chance to rest, recover and try some new things on camp and explore new places off camp with other staff.
