Coach Basketball at Summer Camp

Have a slam dunk summer.

Summer Camp Basketball Jobs

  • Overview

Basketball is everywhere at Camp IHC.  Everyday you can hear the thump of the ball or the squeak of sneakers on courts.  Whether it’s a pick-up game on the bunkline, a scheduled game on one of our many courts, or the solitary dedicated baller shooting hoops--there is always a ball in play.

At Camp IHC basketball coaches will teach around five to six periods a day. You’ll run classes with campers from 6-16 years old with a variety of abilities. There will also be opportunities to coach specialized classes to more advanced basketball players. You’ll referee competitive games, coach IHC teams against other camps in tournaments and help campers gain a better understanding of the sport.

  • Why Teach Basketball at Camp?

Basketball is one of the “classics” at camp. Our Camp Director Joel Rutkowski even started his IHC journey as a basketball coach back in the 90s!

Being a basketball coach is an incredibly rewarding job, but it’s not an easy job. You’ll have groups of campers with different abilities in the same class or campers who just aren’t into it that day, so at times it will challenge you. But you will love it and you will get to see your hard work pay off when you see your campers hit game winning shots, or learn a crossover for the first time.

At the end of the summer your coaching and leadership skills will become more defined and polished.

At Camp IHC you’ll be a role model both on and off the court to our campers. They will look up to you in so many ways and as cliche as it sounds, they will 100% have an impact on you too.

FAQs

  • Coaching periods are around 40-50 minutes long. You’ll normally coach 5 or 6 periods a day. Campers will turn up at the basketball courts with their camp counselors. From the get go you will need to engage with the campers and get them ready for the lesson. You and your team will have lesson plans (that you help build!) that will be tailored for the different levels and abilities. Those 40-50 minutes are yours to make as amazing as possible.

  • A typical class will have around 12-18 campers. Sometimes bunks have split activities or off-camp trips, or perhaps two bunks are scheduled for basketball at once! This means you can sometimes have a handful of campers or a larger class to teach. You will have a schedule for each day to know what campers to expect before the day starts.

  • Yes! There are different types of tournaments over the summer. There are divisional tournaments where bunks will play mini-tournaments against each other. There are inter-camp tournaments where different camps will play against each other. There are off-camp tournaments where you will go to another camp to represent IHC with your team.

  • Yes. When we play against other camps you will travel with campers and other camp counselors to represent Camp IHC. You’ll go for most of the day and you will coach campers making sure they are playing fair, having fun, and keeping safe.

  • Throughout the summer you will live in a bunk with campers and other camp counselors. When you’re not coaching you’ll connect with them and be part of their group to provide extra coverage. During this time you’ll have an opportunity to take part in other activities with them and help your team out.

  • Yes. On a regular schedule you will have one period off each day.

You will also have one full day and night off each week. This is your chance to rest, recover and try some new things on camp and explore new places off camp with other staff.
